About DWA

What is a Disability Employment Network Service?

The Commonwealth Government fund approximately 405 disability open employment services with 790 outlets across Australia to provide employment services to eligible job seekers with a disability. This sector is experiencing continuous and rapid growth, development and change.

Most outlets assist people with a range of disabilities; however there are outlets that specialise in assisting specific disability types, for example people with vision impairments and people with intellectual disabilities.

The DEN providers enters into a contract with the Government to "case manage" a certain number of people with a disability by providing the following services:

  • assessment of job seekers skills and abilities to focus on suitable, sustainable employment;
  • training and work experience to increase their job readiness;
  • identify work place modifications that may be required for the job seeker to perform the tasks required;
  • provide assistance with job seeking and on the job support if required;
  • offer information on incentives, subsidies and supported wage available for the employer;
  • on site training for employers and co-workers.

What is CRS Australia?

CRS Australia is also funded by the Commonwealth Government to provide vocational rehabilitation services to people with a disability through 170 outlets nationally.

Until 1998 CRS Australia was known as the Commonwealth Rehabilitation Service. The original service began in the 1940's to assist injured men and woman from the armed forces and people on invalid pensions to return to the workforce.

The organisation provided vocational rehabilitation services through centres, which were based in every capital city in Australia.

CRS Australia has changed greatly since those early days. The ability to work with people in their own communities, and become part of the framework of those communities, is one of CRS Australia's strengths today.

CRS do this by providing:

  • accurate assessments of job seekers with a disability to identify specific vocational barriers;
  • individualised rehabilitation programs to overcome barriers;
  • specialised job matching and placement services;
  • personal and career counselling;
  • Occupational Health and Safety consultancy services to employers;
  • work training for eligible job seekers, negotiated up to 13 weeks.

Disability Open Employment Services and CRS Australia provide a large pool of available workers for you to chose from. Over 25,000 people with a disability are successful in gaining employment with their assistance each year.
