Employment of People with a disability in the Victorian Public Service

In late 2005, DWA was delighted to be given the opportunity to develop and sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the State of Victoria to increase employment opportunities within the Victorian Public Service for people with a disability. As part of the MOU, all Department's entered into an agreement with DWA, through the development of a tailored Individual Customised Plan to suit the specific needs of the Department.

This arrangement was reinforced by our goals within the VPS Disability Action Plan 2005 – 2008 i.e. to “provide opportunities for people with a disability to obtain employment and develop careers”.

Whilst program funding by the federal government lapsed late 2006, DOJ has continued to use the DWA applicant referral and support service as part of normal recruitment processes.

A fresh source of funding was announced by Lisa Neville, Minister for Community Services on 3 December last year (International Day of People with a disability). As a result, a new Memorandum of Understanding was signed between DWA and the State of Victoria in February 2008.

The MOU aims to facilitate continued / increased access for people with a disability into employment opportunities within the Victorian Public Service (VPS). DWA and the State Government are currently well into a 12 month pilot program that commenced earlier this year and involves all ten of the VPS departments.

The services provided by DWA to job seekers with a disability and the VPS are:

Establish and manage a Disability Employment Register to identify eligible people with a disability who are seeking employment in the VPS,

  • Liaise with HR consultants and managers on VPS department job vacancies and refer applications from suitable candidates for consideration in selection process,
  • Monitor vacancies on the VPS website and refer suitable candidates,
  • Provide support to applicants with a disability during selection process.

People with a disability are encouraged to view the VPS career site www.careers.vic.gov.au and should you identify suitable positions, please contact the DWA Office in Melbourne with the details. DWA staff will arrange to meet with you and support your application as appropriate.
